Frequently Asked Questions About Tutoring

"My son is struggling in school.
Will a tutor help?"

Yes! If you want to end your child's learning struggles a tutor can help! Working one-to-one, the tutor zeros in on your child's needs. Tutors use a variety of teaching methods to find how your child learns. It's easy for a child to fall behind in today's large classes. A tutor, like a coach, gives individualized attention.  Beginning athletes use coaches to develop new skills. Top athletes use coaches to win. The same is true in school. One-to-one is the most effective way to increase student achievement.

"Even when I asked the teacher questions, I still didn't get it. My tutor explains things so I can understand it!"

"I had my doubts about whether tutoring would be over-kill. After the first meeting with the tutor, my daughter said, 'Mom - I get it! I love math!' Talk about validating that I did the right thing."

"Our daughter is doing well in school. Still, we want more math and science. But it has to be FUN! What do you suggest?"

We'll develop an exciting program with lots of fun skill building activities. We customize each program based on your child's interests and goals. Math games, science experiments, field trips, writing, art projects and more! Learning can be fun!

"He is so excited about the program you've developed! He can't wait to do the next experiment!"

"Our son is a good student, but we're concerned with his heavy load
of Honors and AP classes this semester. Would a tutor help?"

High achievers really excel with one-to-one tutoring. An extra boost can turn a high B into a solid A. However, our philosophy is not to pressure a student toward a perfect GPA. We don't like to see kids or parents create excessive stress based on grades. Rather, the support of a tutor can strengthen understanding and improve confidence. Higher confidence reduces stress and helps a student pursue a balance in life.

"Our daughter was the only student from her school selected to participate in the National Leadership Program."

"Why choose Learning Matters, Inc. over a homework or tutoring center?"

With Learning Matters, Inc., your child gets full undivided attention, meeting one-to-one with the same tutor each session. Familiarity boosts confidence.  It's easier to ask questions. We focus on your child's class homework and materials. This translates to improved school performance. We match tutors and students.  We make every effort to match personalities, but if your child doesn't like a certain tutor, we will make a change.  Learning Matters, Inc. offers ongoing support.  Together we monitor progress and make adjustments as needed to improve results.

Many centers use prescriptive curriculum and drills.  If you are considering a tutoring center, first evaluate your child's needs.  Ask questions like, "Will my child compete for tutor attention with other students?", "Will they meet with the same tutor each session?", "What if we don't like the tutor?" and "How will this improve current school performance?"

Learning Matters, Inc. customizes services for your child.

"The tutor has been wonderful and supportive. As a result our daughter has really 'come out of her shell'. We have seen a great improvement."

"Does the tutor come to our home?"

Yes. With busy sports schedules and after school activities, enjoy the convenience of having our qualified tutors do the driving. Meeting in the comfort and security of a student's own home also tends to increase confidence and promote learning. We do require that a parent or guardian be present in the home during the tutoring session.

"Thank you for accommodating our busy schedules! It's one less place to car-pool."

"Where should they study? "

Establish a quiet place for studying. The space should be well-lit and comfortable, with minimum distractions. Some study at a kitchen table, or at a desk. Stock the desk or a "school box" with all the standard supplies. For younger kids, this may include rulers, pencils, crayons, scissors, glue, construction paper, etc. For older kids this includes pens, graph paper, notebook paper, a calculator, etc. Creating an organized study space improves study habits that carry over when the student is studying on their own.

"Having a "school box" is a good idea to have supplies in one place. Just like using a "soccer bag" for sports equipment, we're developing habits to keep supplies organized for study."

"How many tutoring sessions are required?"

No long term contract is required. Each session is a one hour minimum.  Two sessions per week is very effective to help students keep up with class material. We will help develop a plan to benefit your child and fit your schedule.

"Since starting the one to one tutoring, her attitude, confidence and work have improved greatly! She now helps explain to others in class!"

"Our son understands the material, but is failing the class."

Not doing homework, not turning in homework on time, not participating in class, test anxiety, or not following directions, are just a few of the things to consider if a child is failing a class. As adults we forget that kids don't have the same "big picture" mentality that we do. We help evaluate the situation and see what is needed, including study skills, organization, test preparation, etc.

"You're doing an excellent job dissecting the problem. This really helps see how to address our daughter's problems in school."
